Whether painting in the studio or outdoors, Susan Terpning tries to achieve a clarity of vision in her art. To create her oil paintings Susan combines the techniques of alla prima and classical realism.

Her Native American paintings have been inspired by a lifelong interest in indigenous tribal cultures. Visits to museums and historical re-enactments have provided specific painting ideas. Also a wildlife enthusiast, Susan travels locally and sometimes to far flung places for painting ideas.

Inspiration has come from other artists, especially her father, Howard Terpning. Other heroes include Louis Fuertes, Malvina Hoffman and N.C. Wyeth.

Susan enjoys the process of striving to achieve her vision for each painting. It is this striving that makes the act of painting such a compelling challenge.
